1. How does St. Venant’s principle affect the stress distribution for contact stresses such as that given in Equation 4.58 in your text?
2. The solution for an infinite plate that contains a circular hole is given on page 125 of your text and described by Equations 4.53. What is the error involved in assuming an infinite plate? In other words, how far away from the center of the hole do we have to be to consider our solution infinite? Show work!
3. Use superposition of stresses (of Equations 4.53) to determine the stress distribution of a small circular hole in a flat plate under uniform shearing stress. [Recall that a plate loaded biaxially with stresses of opposite signs can represent a plate under pure shear if the angles are properly selected.]
4. Select three test geometries for stress intensity determination as listed in Section 8.6 and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the three selected.
5. Determine the residual stresses that can develop in and around particles of alumina in a soda lime silica glass matrix. Provide the source for any values used in your calculations. If you have to make assumptions regarding material, equations, etc., please state your assumption(s) and list your reason(s) for the assumption(s).
